China's trade surplus against the United States grew nearly 4 percent year on year in the first two months of 2025. This could add fuel to the escalating trade friction between the world's two largest economies. Customs authorities in China on Friday released trade data for the January-February period. The country's exports to the US increased 2.3 percent from a year earlier in dollar terms. Shipments from the US rose 2.7 percent. This left China with a trade surplus of over 49 billion dollars with the US, up 3.7 percent from the same period last year. The two countries have been slapping new tariffs on each other since last month. Most recently, the US administration of President Donald Trump doubled its additional levies on Chinese goods to 20 percent early this month. China has announced extra tariffs on some farm produce from the US in response. Trump has repeatedly criticized his country's massive trade deficit, vowing to tackle it with higher tariffs. The same set of data show the value of China's total exports expanded 2.3 percent thanks to brisk shipments to Southeast Asia. Imports dropped 8.4 percent.
