Singapore's Changi Airport has begun construction of its fifth terminal, to handle more passengers and strengthen its position as a leading air hub in Asia. Changi already has capacity for 90 million passengers annually, making it the world's fourth busiest international airport. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong attended Wednesday's groundbreaking ceremony. He says Singapore needs to work hard as the airport expansion race heats up in Asia. Wong said: "Competition is also sharpening. Other countries are investing significantly in modernizing their airport infrastructure and in adjacent infrastructure like airport cities. Singapore must continue to work hard. We must remain connected to the world and we must ensure our air hub stays competitive." Terminal 5 is expected to open in the mid-2030s. Changi will then be able to accommodate 140 million passengers a year. The new terminal will feature innovative technologies. It will be equipped with enhanced ventilation systems, based on lessons learned from COVID. Many operations will be automated, using artificial intelligence and robots. The International Air Transport Association says passenger numbers in the Asia-Pacific are expected to double by 2043. That has prompted airports in places like Hong Kong, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City to embark on expansions.
