Hamas has condemned US President Donald Trump's remarks, suggesting the United States take over the Gaza Strip, saying it reflects a "deep ignorance of Palestine and the region."

The group issued a statement on Wednesday in response to the president's comments on the previous day proposing long-term US ownership of Gaza.

The statement said the territory is part of Palestinian land occupied by Israel. It added that any solution cannot be based "on the mentality of a real estate merchant, and the mentality of power and domination."

Hamas also commented on Trump's expression of support for the permanent resettlement of Palestinians away from Gaza.

The statement said the Palestinian people, with support from Arab and Islamic nations, as well as other people around the world, "will thwart all displacement and deportation plans."

Following Trump's remarks, Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry also released a statement, reaffirming its unwavering support for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The statement, issued Wednesday, said Saudi Arabia expresses its "unequivocal rejection of any infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, whether through Israeli settlement polices, land annexation, or attempts to displace the Palestinian people from their land."

It also said lasting and just peace cannot be achieved "without the Palestinian people obtaining their legitimate rights in accordance with international resolutions."

The statement added that Saudi Arabia clarified that stance to both the former and current US administrations.

In late January, Trump requested that Jordan and Egypt, which border the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip respectively, accept residents from Gaza. His remarks drew strong reactions from those countries, as well as other Arab nations and the Palestinian Authority.
