Turkey's election authority said on Friday that the country's presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on May 14. Turkey is facing an urgent need to secure homes for survivors of the February 6 earthquakes and help them rebuild their lives. The quakes left at least 47,932 people dead in the country and seriously damaged 230,000 buildings. Turkey's ruling parties aim to speed up reconstruction with the reelection of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The opposition camp is calling for a change of government. It says authorities allowed the construction of buildings that did not meet quake-resistance standards, which added to the damage. On Monday, six opposition parties nominated Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the largest opposition party, as their joint candidate to run against Erdogan. Some quake survivors are asking for assistance instead of elections. The ruling and opposition camps have each released policies, focusing on post-election reconstruction.
