Friday marks one month since Israeli forces launched an invasion of southern Lebanon. The prospect of a ceasefire remains unclear as both Israel and the Lebanon-based Shia Muslim group Hezbollah continue to exchange fire. The Israeli military says it mounted airstrikes on Baalbek in eastern Lebanon and Nabatieh in southern Lebanon on Wednesday. They say the attacks struck Hezbollah's command and control centers as well as what Israel calls "terrorist infrastructure." Lebanon's health authorities say the attacks killed 19 people. Israeli air raids on Thursday claimed another six lives across southern Lebanon. Israeli media say Hezbollah rocket fire hit northern Israel, killing seven people, including foreign workers. Lebanese health officials say Israeli attacks on the country have left 2,822 people dead and more than 12,000 others wounded since October last year. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he met US President Joe Biden's special envoys Amos Hochstein and Brett McGurk in Jerusalem on Thursday. McGurk is the White House coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa. Details of the meeting remain unknown, but it is believed that a ceasefire proposal reportedly written by the US to halt fighting between Israel and Hezbollah was discussed. Israel's public broadcaster says the draft calls for Israel to withdraw all its forces from Lebanon within seven days of the ceasefire being announced. The broadcaster adds that the document also requires the Lebanese military to dismantle and confiscate all non-state military infrastructure in southern Lebanon within 60 days. Hezbollah pledges solidarity with the Islamic group Hamas, which Israeli forces are trying to destroy in the Gaza Strip. Hezbollah's new leader Naim Qassem indicated in a statement on Wednesday that a ceasefire in Gaza is necessary for a similar deal between his group and Israel.
