Ishiba Shigeru has been re-elected Prime Minister of Japan following a runoff vote in the Diet's Lower House.
It was the first vote of its kind in thirty years, coming after the ruling coalition lost its majority in last month's election.
Speaking after launching his new cabinet, Ishiba told reporters a party task force will quickly draft a political reform plan to win back public support.
At a press conference Monday evening, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru said, "In response to the severe election results, the Liberal Democratic Party must be reborn as a party for the people. We have to go back to the drawing board to be a party that can take on people's suffering, grief and anger as if it was our own."
Ishiba says his party will take necessary legal steps toward reforms of the political funds control law by the end of this year at the earliest, and will ask for cooperation from other parties.
Ishiba also told LDP lawmakers to listen to the opinions of those in other parties when submitting legislation.
He said, "We will continue running the government on the basis of cooperation between the LDP and Komeito.
And we will seek the understanding of as many parties as possible and work carefully and humbly to ensure the safety and security of the people."
Ishiba says his government will draw up new economic measures to raise people's wages to outpace rising prices.
Ishiba also touched on diplomatic plans. He says he wants to meet with US President-elect Donald Trump as soon as possible. Ishiba intends to maintain Japan's close relationship with Washington and raise their alliance to a higher level.
