Weather officials in Japan are forecasting another sweltering day in much of the country on Monday, with temperatures expected to soar to dangerous levels in the regions of Kanto-Koshin, Tokai, Hokuriku, and Kinki.
A high-pressure system has been bringing clear skies and high temperatures, mainly in eastern and western Japan.
The mercury rose to 40 degrees Celsius in Nagoya on Sunday. It was the ninth day this year that highs in the country have hit 40 degrees or more, and marks a new annual record.
Daytime highs on Monday are expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius in Kumagaya City in Saitama Prefecture, the cities of Nagoya and Toyama, Toyooka City in Hyogo Prefecture, and Maizuru City in Kyoto Prefecture.
Temperatures are likely to hit 36 degrees in central Tokyo, Osaka City, and some other locations.
Heatstroke alerts have been issued for 35 of Japan's 47 prefectures, from the Tohoku region to Okinawa Prefecture.
People are being urged to take thorough precautions against heatstroke by using air conditioners properly, consuming adequate amounts of fluids and salt, and taking frequent breaks during outdoor activities.
Atmospheric conditions are expected to become extremely unstable in northern Japan through Tuesday due to warm, moist air flowing into a front and a low- pressure system. Downpours with thunder are possible in some areas.
In the 24 hours through Tuesday morning, up to 120 millimeters of rain is expected in Hokkaido, and 100 millimeters in Tohoku. For the following 24 hours through Wednesday morning, up to 120 millimeters of rain is likely in Tohoku.
People are urged to be on alert for possible landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and swelling and overflowing rivers. Caution is also advised against lightning strikes, strong gusts such as tornadoes, and hail.
