Powerful earthquakes struck western Afghanistan on Saturday, and the Taliban said the death toll has risen above 2,000. The United States Geological Survey said the first quake registering 6.3 occurred in the western province of Herat before noon, local time. Strong aftershocks also hit the region. Many people are believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings. The earthquakes are the latest in a series of major temblors in Afghanistan. In June last year, a magnitude 5.9 quake hit the eastern Afghan province of Khost, killing more than 1,000 people.
