Toyota Motor has unveiled its new pedal-free driving system that uses only hand controls. The automaker says it will allow people with lower limb impairment to drive more easily. The Neo Steer system was shown off at the venue of the Para Athletic World Championships in Kobe, which started on Friday. Acceleration controls are on the right side of the wheel and brakes are on the left. The driver uses the right thumb for the gas, and the fingers of the left hand to slow down. Para alpine skier Morii Taiki says he believes a lot of people will be able to get freedom of movement with the system. Steering is controlled by electric signals, allowing the driver to turn without using a hand-over-hand motion. The open floor space without pedals also offers an unrestricted driving position. Toyota says the system is still in the prototype stage, but it aims to put it into practical use as early as possible.
