The operator of a sushi restaurant chain in Japan is set to offer its used cooking oil for the production of sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF. Food & Life Companies, the parent firm of sushi chain Sushiro, is teaming up with 3 businesses including engineering firm JGC Holdings for the project. Food & Life Companies says used cooking oil will be collected from about 680 outlets, such as conveyor-belt sushi restaurants and Izakaya. A joint venture set up by JGC Holdings along with other firms will use the oil to produce SAF at a refinery to be built in Osaka. The companies say they expect to make around 750,000 liters of SAF per year and provide the fuel mainly to domestic airlines. Food & Life Companies official Hayashi Mayumi says climate change poses risks to their business as it depends on marine resources. Hayashi says they want to take a step toward creating a recycling-oriented society by offering used cooking oil for sustainable fuel. SAF is said to emit about 80 percent less carbon dioxide than conventional fuel. The government aims to have airlines in Japan replace 10 percent of their aviation fuel with SAF by 2030.
