US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says he will meet in person with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng next week to discuss trade.
Bessent made the remark in a social media post following an online meeting between US and Chinese officials. China&#039;s state-run media reported that the meeting on Saturday was attended by Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer from the US side and Vice Premier He from the Chinese side. The report said they agreed to hold the next round of trade talks as soon as possible.
Bessent also wrote that he and the vice premier &quot;engaged in frank and detailed discussions regarding trade&quot; and that they will meet next week to continue their discussions.
Earlier on Friday, Bessent told reporters that he and Vice Premier He would meet in Malaysia to prepare for the US and Chinese presidents to meet.
US President Donald Trump also spoke to the reporters and said, &quot;I think we&#039;re getting along with China.&quot; Referring to a possible meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump said, &quot;I think we&#039;ll make a deal that will be good for both.&quot;
The US has reacted sharply against China&#039;s recent announcement that it is tightening export controls on rare earths. Attention is focused on whether Bessent and Vice Premier He will make progress in next week&#039;s talks so that a summit between Trump and Xi can take place in South Korea in late October.
