Another storm is expected to approach very close to Tokyo's Izu Islands on Monday, following a typhoon that battered the area just days ago. People should take extra caution against landslides and violent winds.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says that as of 6 a.m. on Sunday, Severe Tropical Storm Nakri was situated over waters off the country's western region of Shikoku. It says the storm was moving northeast at 20 kilometers per hour.
Nakri is generating sustained wind speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts of 126 kilometers per hour.
Nakri is forecast to head east while gathering strength. It is predicted to bring strong winds to southern parts of the Kyushu region for several hours.
Torrential rain could hit southern areas of the Tohoku region.
Nakri is forecast to approach the Izu Islands from dawn to shortly before noon on Monday.
It is predicted to pack sustained wind speeds of up to 108 kilometers per hour near its center, and gusts of 162 kilometers per hour. Such winds are powerful enough to overturn traveling trucks.
The sea will also become very rough, with waves expected to surge up to 9 meters.
Risks of disasters are already high on the Izu Islands. Record rainfalls and violent winds unleashed by Typhoon Halong last week have loosened the ground and damaged structures.
People should stay vigilant for mudslides and violent winds, as well as flooding in low-lying areas, swollen and overflowing rivers, and high waves. They should also remain careful of lightning and gusty winds, such as tornados.
