Hong Kong's High Court has dismissed the government's request to ban a song that became synonymous with mass protests. "Glory to Hong Kong" was heard often at mass rallies in 2019. The Hong Kong government applied for a total ban, including performances and any content shared online, saying some of the lyrics incite secession. But on Friday, the court rejected the move, citing the importance of freedom of expression. Authorities in Hong Kong have been cracking down on free speech. The head of the Hong Kong Journalists Association, Ronson Chan, welcomed the court's decision, adding that a ban would have been a chilling use of power. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee told reporters in Malaysia that he has instructed his judicial officials to examine the decision and consider a response.
