Students in Hiroshima have presented a picture-story show about a young victim of the atomic bombing for the 78th anniversary. Sasaki Sadako died of leukemia at the age of 12 after being exposed to radiation from the blast when she was two years old. She was the inspiration for the figure that graces the top of the Children's Peace Monument in Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park. Students of Akifuchu High School in Fuchu Town, neighboring Hiroshima City, staged the show on Sunday in the Peace Memorial Park to mark the anniversary with the help of local junior high and elementary school students. Visitors to the park from Japan and abroad listened as the students narrated a series of episodes from Sadako's short life in Japanese and English. They included the story of the paper cranes she kept folding in her hospital bed to pray for her recovery. A traveler from Germany said he was moved by the presentation, adding that it is wonderful that young people are engaged in such an activity. One of the presenters, a third-year student of Akifuchu High School, said she thinks it important for young generations to learn more about the atomic bombing and contribute to spreading a message of peace.
