Japanese automaker Daihatsu Motor says it plans to add more than 5,000 companies with indirect business relations to those it will compensate for costs incurred based on Daihatsu's total production halt. Daihatsu stopped operations at all its factories in Japan after irregularities were found in the company's test data. Daihatsu had earlier spoken of plans to compensate its 400 or so direct suppliers. Now, the carmaker has presented a new plan to also compensate second- and third-tier suppliers as well as other contractors with which it does not have direct relations. The company says it has in mind compensating irrecoverable costs for parts that have already been manufactured. It is also considering compensation for personnel costs so firms can keep staff employed in preparation to restart production. Daihatsu says it is now explaining its compensation plans to those companies, and will discuss specific assistance with individual suppliers. It is also telling companies that it cannot currently say when production can resume. The carmaker says it will deal sincerely with everyone concerned. Daihatsu's parent company, Toyota Motor, has announced that it will provide financial support to Daihatsu.
