Democrats to keep control of US Senate NHK

ABC News is projecting Democrats will maintain control of the US Senate. The question is which party will win a majority in the House of Representatives.

Voters are waiting to see who will be in control of Congress after midterm elections in the United States.

ABC News predicts Democrat Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is certain to beat her Republican challenger, Adam Laxalt in Nevada.

Cortez Masto is the first Hispanic woman in the Senate. In her campaign she stressed the revitalization of employment and the economy in a state where the coronavirus pandemic dealt a heavy blow to its core industries of tourism and entertainment.

It projects Democrats will have at least half of the 100 seats in the Senate, including those that were not up for reelection this year. The Vice President holds the tie-breaking vote if the Senate is evenly split.

The Democrats have held the Senate majority by a thin margin for two years.

The control of the Senate has been called before the result of the Georgia runoff. It is the last remaining seat to be decided on December 6.

The victory for the Democrats is especially significant as historically the ruling party tends to lose badly in mid-term elections.

Biden has narrowly escaped losing control of both chambers despite his low approval ratings because of record high inflation in the country.

Meanwhile, the future of the House remains unclear as vote counting continues. The Associated Press has reported the Democrats have won 203 seats and the Republicans 211, but neither has reached a majority of 218.

Pre-election polls suggested a Republican advantage over the Democrats, but the Democrats are apparently putting up a good fight.

Former President Donald Trump is making claims of election fraud in states where candidates he endorsed are projected to lose. Some fear post-election turmoil.
