Iran unveils its first domestic hypersonic missile NHK

Iran has unveiled what it says is its first domestically developed hypersonic missile.

The country's elite Revolutionary Guards Corps unveiled the missile at a ceremony on Tuesday. A commander said the weapon is capable of precisely hitting any target, and penetrating any defense shield.

President Ebrahim Raisi spoke at the ceremony, saying the knowledge was obtained in country, and vowed the missile program won't be stopped by intimidation.

Iran's state-run news agency reported that the missile travels Mach 15, or 15 times faster than the speed of sound. Its range is said to be 1,400 kilometers, allowing it to reach Tehran's longtime adversary Israel.

Iran has been continuing developing missiles despite international sanctions for its nuclear program.

In late May, the country unveiled what it describes as a new ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers.

Analysts warn that Iran's missile program may anger Israel and escalate tensions in the region.
