Japan's Finance Ministry says seizures of imported counterfeit goods topped 30,000 cases last year. That's the second-highest figure since record-keeping began in 1987. Officials say cases nationwide totaled 31,666 in 2023. The figure is up 17.5 percent from the previous year, and surpasses 30,000 for the first time in three years. Seventy-nine percent involved items from China. Clothing topped the list with 10,401 cases, or 28 percent of the total, followed by bags and shoes. Officials say many items were related to Japanese anime, such as Studio Ghibli and "Pokemon." Customs officers also found counterfeit uniforms of Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei shortly after his transfer to the Los Angeles Dodgers was announced in December. The Finance Ministry says many counterfeit goods are being distributed through e-commerce. Officials are urging people to be wary of extremely low prices.
