NHK has learned that Japan's chief negotiator on US tariffs is expected to visit Washington next week for talks with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The Japanese government on Friday launched a task force led by Economic Revitalization Minister Akazawa Ryosei, who is in charge of negotiating tariffs with the US side.
Government officials told NHK that Akazawa will visit the US capital for three days and meet with Bessent and Greer on Wednesday local time.
Akazawa is expected to strongly call for a review of the tariff measures introduced by the administration of President Donald Trump.
He hopes to gain an understanding of what the US side really wants to negotiate and what it wants from Japan.
Akazawa said that he will negotiate with the US officials while keeping in mind what is best for Japan's national interests and what is most effective.
He also expressed a willingness to discuss non-tariff barriers and exchange rates if those topics are included in the agenda.
