Japan's Diet has approved a supplementary budget to fund the government's new economic package for this fiscal year. It totals more than 13 trillion yen, or nearly 90 billion dollars.
The bill cleared the Upper House on Wednesday with support from the ruling parties and others, following its passage in the Lower House on Friday.
At an Upper House plenary session before the voting, the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party said the government must address people's concerns and hardships. The party noted that the government must also deal with rising prices until Japan achieves a complete exit from deflation.
The LDP said it is extremely important to swiftly pass the supplementary budget to facilitate the economic package.
The opposition Constitutional Democratic Party said the approval rating for the Kishida administration has shown a record decline, and people do not support its economic measures or supplementary budget plan at all.
The CDP also said the government is losing public trust as people say what it does is different from what it says. The opposition party noted that Kishida says he listens to the people, but he just listens, and does not carry out his political duty for the people.
The supplementary budget also includes a handout of about 470 dollars to low-income households and an extension of subsidies for gasoline, electricity and gas bills. The budget will also be used to realize sustainable wage increases and promote domestic investment.
