Biden visits Maui to inspect wildfire devastation NHK

President Joe Biden is visiting the US state of Hawaii to inspect the massive damage caused by wildfires in Maui two weeks ago. He interrupted his summer vacation to go there.

Biden said he has learned of the loss of at least 114 people in the disaster.

He added that he knows how profoundly loss can impact a family and a community.

Biden walked through the scorched remains of Lahaina, a popular tourist destination that was devastated by the fires.

He is also meeting with survivors, first responders, and federal and local officials during his visit.

Search crews have made their way through about 85 percent of the disaster zone, but they still have work to do.

Biden said he will do everything in his power to help people recover and rebuild.
