Son of drug kingpin 'El Chapo' arrested in Mexico, violence erupts NHK

Mexican security authorities have captured the son of a jailed drug kingpin. The arrest triggered violent clashes with members of a notorious drug cartel.

Ovidio Guzman, 32 years old, was detained in the northwestern state of Sinaloa on Thursday. He is the son of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman and a senior member of the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico's largest drug syndicates. Guzman senior had led the cartel.

The United States had put a bounty of over 5 million dollars on information leading to the younger Guzman's arrest or conviction.

Cartel members tried to prevent his transfer by burning vehicles to block roads. A violent gun battle erupted at the airport. One commercial plane was hit by gunfire.

Footage shot inside the plane shows passengers crouching to take cover. Reuters says no one was hurt, but that the airport was forced to suspend operations.

Mexican authorities had previously detained Ovidio Guzman in 2019, only to release him after failing to quell violence unleashed by members of the cartel.
