The United Nations Security Council has held its first meeting on artificial intelligence. The attendees discussed the risks of AI and the need to regulate the technology.
                
The conference took place on Tuesday. It was chaired by Britain, which holds the presidency of the UNSC this month.
                
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres opened the conference by noting that AI has the potential to improve healthcare, education and other aspects of peoples&#039; lives.
                
But he said, &quot;Generative AI has enormous potential for good and evil at scale.&quot;
                
Guterres warned that the misuse of the technology &quot;could have very serious consequences for global peace and security.&quot; He mentioned that it could be used to spread disinformation and to do other negative things.
                
He added, &quot;Without action to address these risks, we are derelict in our responsibilities to present and future generations.&quot; He called for the creation of international rules to control the risks posed by AI.
                
Guterres welcomed an idea put forward by some UN member states. The idea is to establish a new United Nations entity aimed at governing the technology.
                
At the meeting, multiple nations said that the UN should work with private companies and experts to create an international framework.
                
The secretary-general also called for the prohibition of lethal autonomous weapons systems, which work without human control or oversight.
                
He said he intends to urge member states to start negotiations on a ban.
