The World Trade Organization has ruled in favor of Japan's complaint against India's import duties on smartphones, components and base stations. The decision by a dispute panel of the world trade body on Monday cited rules that stipulate such products should be tariff-free in India. India has been raising duties in stages since 2014, and now they are as high as 20 percent. Officials have said the country needed to raise levies to protect domestic industries. Japan's trade ministry said in 2019 that the higher tariffs were having an impact of 2.5 billion yen, or more than 18 million dollars, a year on Japanese consumers and businesses. The Japanese government filed a complaint with the WTO in March 2020 demanding India scrap the duties. The government says it will urge India to comply with the WTO decision and promptly correct the tariffs.
