The US aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan entered the South Korean port of Busan on Thursday morning, following a trilateral exercise with South Korea and Japan. The Ronald Reagan is the second US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to visit South Korea since March. The port call is seen as a show of strengthened deterrence against North Korea. South Korea's defense ministry says the Ronald Reagan, based in Yokosuka near Tokyo, will stay in Busan until Monday. There will be exchange events between US and South Korean forces and public tours of the ship. The Ronald Reagan took part in a two-day joint exercise with Japan and South Korea in the East China Sea that ended on Tuesday. In July, a US nuclear-powered submarine made a port call in South Korea, the first visit of its kind in 42 years. The strategic submarine is capable of carrying ballistic missiles armed with nuclear warheads. North Korea increasingly opposes such moves. Observers say North Korea may respond with a ballistic missile launch or other hostile action.
