Japan has agreed to provide Malaysia with rescue boats and drones under a new security cooperation framework. The agreement was reached at a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim in Tokyo on Saturday. Kishida noted that the international community is facing a historical turning point. He said that through cooperation with Malaysia, Japan hopes to secure a world where human dignity is protected by maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law. The provision of the rescue boats and drones will come under Japan's Official Security Assistance, or OSA. The framework is designed to enhance security ties with like-minded nations through the provision of defense equipment. Kishida and Anwar confirmed that bilateral relations will be elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation in a range of areas, including transition to clean energy, economic security and human exchanges. The meeting was held ahead of the opening of a special summit of Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
