Toyota Motor is expected to build a new electric vehicle battery plant in Fukuoka Prefecture, southwestern Japan. Sources say the automaker is in the process of acquiring land in an industrial park in the prefecture. The new plant will be operated by subsidiary Primearth EV Energy, which produces battery cells for the high-end Lexus brand vehicles made in the same region. Toyota plans to invest five trillion yen, or about 32.5 billion dollars, in the EV business by 2030. It aims to boost annual EV sales to 3.5 million units by 2030 and make new Lexus vehicles all-electric by 2035. The new Fukuoka plant is expected to energize its domestic battery manufacturing system. The automaker is also constructing a battery plant in the United States.
