Reuters has cited India's local authorities as saying that more than 200 people were killed when an Air India plane carrying 242 people on board crashed soon after taking off from Ahmedabad in western India.



Air India said it had "confirmed that Flight AI171, from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an accident today after take-off."



The airline said 242 passengers and crew members were on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. They included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and one Canadian national. It said the injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals.



It said the plane departed Ahmedabad at 1:38 p.m.



Local media footage shows black smoke rising from the crash site, which is near a residential area.



Air India said it "is giving its full cooperation to the authorities investigating this incident," and will provide updates on its website.
