Ukrainian media outlets have reported that Ukraine's government is considering offering compensation and other benefits to young people who join the military. The reports on Monday cited President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as saying that people aged 18 to 24 who enlist would be offered an annual salary of 1 million hryvnias, or about 24,000 dollars. He also reportedly said those who serve for a year in the military would be able to enroll in higher educational institutions for free and without taking any exams. The reports said other benefits would include interest-free mortgages. The move is apparently aimed at recruiting volunteer soldiers. The reports quoted Zelenskyy as saying details of the plan will be officially announced in the coming days. Ukraine lowered its mobilization age from 27 to 25 in April of last year to secure more military personnel. The country faces troop shortages as Russia's invasion drags on. The United States, the largest supporter of Ukraine, has stressed the need for young soldiers to join the fighting. Russia is also stepping up efforts to recruit volunteer soldiers by offering high salaries.
