Kyiv residents urged to stay in shelters after explosion heard NHK

Residents of Ukraine's capital Kyiv are being urged to remain in shelters after what is believed to be an explosion was heard on Thursday morning.

An NHK crew staying at a hotel in Kyiv reported hearing at least one loud explosion at around 10 a.m. local time.

Immediately after that, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on social media that there was an explosion in the city, leaving at least one person dead and two injured. He urged residents to stay at shelters.

Russia has reacted sharply to German and US announcements on Wednesday about sending their mainstay battle tanks to Ukraine.

Air raid sirens sounded multiple times across Ukraine on Wednesday. They were heard intermittently on Thursday morning.

On January 14, Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities were hit by Russian missile attacks. Forty-six people, including children, were killed when a missile struck a 9-story apartment building in the eastern city of Dnipro.
