Police in Gunma Prefecture are conducting extra patrols around schools on Wednesday following a bear attack at a nearby supermarket the previous evening.
A bear estimated to be around 1.4 meters long entered the supermarket in Numata City, north of Tokyo, at around 7:30 p.m., attacking two male customers, one inside the store and the other in a parking lot.
One of the men sustained scratches to an arm and leg, while the other suffered injuries to his arm and back.
The store manager says 30 to 40 customers were inside when the attack happened. The bear reportedly rampaged through the fish and sushi sections before running away.
Two police officers have been deployed to areas around commuting routes for elementary and junior high schools to ensure the safety of the children. Police are also conducting patrols by car.
Authorities say a bear was found in a trap at another location in the city at around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
In the northeastern prefecture of Iwate, police are still trying to identify a body of unknown gender that was found on a mountain in Kitakami City at around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
They say the body has wounds that resemble scratch marks from a bear, and that growling could be heard near the site where it was found.
A male resident of Kanegasaki Town, which adjoins Kitakami City, has been missing since Tuesday. The man in his 70s reportedly went to the mountains to pick mushrooms.
In the northeastern prefecture of Akita, a woman in her 80s was attacked by bear in Daisen City on Wednesday morning, sustaining scratches to her face.
She was reportedly conscious and able to talk when she was transported to a hospital.
The incident means there have now been reports of bear attacks in Akita Prefecture for three days in a row.
