Singapore, Vietnam agree to cooperate on subsea cables NHK

Leaders of Singapore and Vietnam have agreed to upgrade their relations and boost cooperation in various fields, including subsea cables.



Vietnam's Communist Party General Secretary To Lam met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during his visit to Singapore on Wednesday.



They agreed to step up their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. It's Vietnam's highest level of bilateral relations. It would be Singapore's first time to make such a pact with an ASEAN-member country.



The cooperation covers a wide range of fields, including digital transformation, innovation, and infrastructure development.
They vowed in their joint statement to strengthen cooperation on digital connectivity such as undersea cables in the region.



The subsea facility appears to be a new, ambitious field, as demands for expanding AI services and data centers have been growing worldwide. The region is considered geographically important as a junction for Asia and Europe.
Vietnam plans to launch 10 new subsea cables by 2030.
