Prolonged heavy snowfall is hitting wide areas of Japan. Authorities urge people to exercise caution when traveling. The Japan Meteorological Agency says a strong cold air mass is mainly affecting the Tohoku, Hokuriku and Chugoku regions along the Sea of Japan. As of 11 a.m. on Monday, accumulated snowfall had reached 3.81 meters in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture; 3.29 meters in Ohkura Village, Yamagata Prefecture; and 1.43 meters in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. Officials say the conditions are expected to ease, but localized heavy snow is likely to hit flat areas of the Kinki, Chugoku and Shikoku regions. Snowfall for the 24-hour period through Tuesday morning could reach up to 30 centimeters in Niigata Prefecture, as well as the Hokuriku, Chugoku and Kinki regions. Up to 20 centimeters is expected in Shikoku. Authorities say traffic disruptions and avalanches are possible, as well as snow falling from roofs, power outages and fallen trees.
