The Japanese government's "Go To Eat" meal coupon campaign has been resumed in Tokyo after a lapse of about two years. The program is designed to help the restaurant industry, which has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
The campaign offers people meal coupons worth 25 percent more than the sales price. The tickets come in smartphone and paper versions.
The online sales and applications for the digital coupons to be used at restaurants in Tokyo were resumed on Wednesday.
The campaign initially began in the capital in November 2020, but it was suspended within a week as the coronavirus spread widely.
The operators of the program are selling coupons to those who won the purchasing right in a lottery in 2020. They are also accepting lottery applications. The results will be informed by email.
Applications for paper vouchers will begin on November 10.
The operators say they are ready to provide digital tickets worth about 85 million dollars and paper tickets worth about 225 million dollars.
They say the coupons will be sold through December 25 or until they are sold out, and can be used through January 25. The operators add that people living outside Tokyo are also allowed to buy them.
