Russia has re-designed Soviet era bomb carriers and bombs to increase precision 
Russia has dropped a "smart bomb" on itself in Belgorod Oblast, a telegram channel reported on Sunday, as Moscow continues to strike Ukraine.

According to the Astra Telegram channel, a UMPB-250 bomb fell in the Russian village of Bolshiye Kulbaki but did not cause any casualties or damage. This is yet another blow to Russia as North Korean troops are reportedly retreating from Kursk frontlines.

While the bomb uses the same warhead as the FAB-250 from the Soviet era, it has improved aerodynamic capabilities to strike at increased ranges, the Kyiv Independent reported.

Designed to be "smart," the UMPB-250 can "glide" and has a navigation module with steering, antennas, and a turbojet power unit.

Moscow has altered and upgraded the Soviet-era bombs to strike Ukraine with pinpoint accuracy as they continue to ramp up their offense in the three-year-long war.

According to Astra, Moscow dropped the bomb accidentally on Jan. 23 which is aligned with the concerns raised by the UK Defense Ministry about the increase in frequency of Russian bombing accidents.

These blunders may be a result of inadequate training and exhaustion among flight operators and ground crew, according to the Ministry.

It is the latest addition to a staggering 165 incidents of Russia accidentally bombing itself or Russian-controlled Ukrainian areas in 2024, Astra reports. In 2025 alone, there have been 13 FABs, one missile, and one UMPB-250 incident.

In 2024, Russia labeled the Telegram channel a "foreign agent" for allegedly spreading "inaccurate information" about governance to promote a "negative image" of the Kremlin military.

The Russian ministry said that since Astra "opposed the special military operation in Ukraine," they were being considered a foreign agent, a label the Kremlin often associates with those that oppose or criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin's government.
