The US Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump has immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts taken as president. This increased the likelihood that a trial on the case involving his attempt to overturn the 2020 election will not be held before the November presidential poll. The court wrote that Trump "is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts." The court added there is "no immunity for unofficial acts." It said Trump's case will be sent back to the lower courts for further review. In the wake of the presidential election that Trump lost to President Joe Biden, rioters stormed the Capitol building in 2021.
