Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is the last of the Group of Seven country leaders to visit Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion. Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson became the first G7 leader to visit the country, in April last year. His successor, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, went in November. Sunak announced additional military aid, including anti-aircraft guns and radars to counter Russian drone attacks. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv last May. He promised to provide small arms and ammunition, and aid for the removal of landmines. In June, the leaders of France, Germany and Italy headed to Ukraine to show their support, pledging more military aid and backing Kyiv's bid to join the European Union. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who took office last fall, visited in February of this year. She said that Italy would provide the country with a surface-to-air missile system. The same month, US President Joe Biden made an unannounced visit to Ukraine to meet with Zelenskyy, days before the one-year anniversary of the invasion.
