Sunday marks exactly six months since a conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and a paramilitary group. Sporadic fighting has continued, mostly in the capital Khartoum, and there is no roadmap to peace. More than 5.8 million people have been displaced, and that is raising concerns the humanitarian crisis could deepen. The national forces and the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, have been fighting since April. The United Nations says the conflict has left at least 1,200 people dead, and forced more than 5.8 million people to take refuge within Sudan or in other countries. Local media outlets say people do not have enough water and food in the areas where fighting is still going on. They also say that poor sanitary conditions are causing communicable diseases, such as cholera and dengue fever, to spread. Many foreign nationals, including Japanese people, have been forced to evacuate. That is disrupting international aid activities. Countries neighboring Sudan, such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, have been urging both sides to agree to a ceasefire or sit down for peace talks. But it appears that the two sides will keep fighting.
