A coal mine collapse in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has left two dead and more than 50 others missing. China's state-run Xinhua News Agency and others report that the major collapse occurred at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, trapping workers and vehicles in the mine. The accident left six others injured while 53 remain missing. More than 200 rescue workers are at the site. Chinese President Xi Jinping has demanded all-out search and rescue efforts, as well as the treatment of those injured. He also ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident and instructed that those responsible be held accountable. The accident comes ahead of China's National People's Congress, which will be convened in March. Xi called on relevant authorities to take responsibility at all times to protect the lives of the people and safeguard social stability. The government of President Xi Jinping appears determined to ensure that the accident does not fuel social unrest ahead of the National People's Congress, one of China's most important political events.
