The US House of Representatives has passed a defense policy bill which includes military spending aimed at strengthening US deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region. The House approved the fiscal 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, with a majority vote on Thursday. The NDAA sets the national security budget at a record 886 billion dollars, up 3 percent from the previous fiscal year. It authorizes 14.7 billion dollars for the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, which is aimed at countering China's expanding military presence in the region. The NDAA also said the Defense Department should submit a report before June next year on enhancing security cooperation with Japan, including possibly modifying the command structure of the US military in Japan. The move follows Japan's decision to set up a joint command for the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces. The NDAA has already passed the Senate, and will be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law.
