The organizer of the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka has revised upward its construction cost estimate. Informed sources say that after a review, the association now expects total costs of up to 235 billion yen, or 1.57 billion dollars. That's an increase of 335 million dollars from its 2020 estimate, and 1.8 times the original plan. Construction costs were initially set at about 840 million dollars at the current exchange rate. The organizer attributes the increase to higher materiel and labor costs, as well as additional outlays for smoother construction processes. The costs are to be equally split among three parties: the central government, Osaka Prefecture and Osaka City, and the business community. Under the latest estimate, the government will have to shoulder up to 525 million dollars, which means a greater burden on taxpayers. The association plans to report its cost estimate to the government, Osaka Prefecture and Osaka City as early as next week. The central government is set to include necessary responses in the economic package it plans to compile by the end of this month.
