Iceland has both female president and prime minister for first time NHK

Iceland has both a female president and a female prime minister for the first time, after Kristrun Frostadottir was appointed prime minister.

Frostadottir, the head of the center-left Social Democratic Alliance, announced her appointment on Saturday. The 36-year-old is the youngest prime minister in the country's history.

The Nordic country held a general election last month, and Frostadottir's party became the largest force, edging out the ruling coalition. The party agreed to form a coalition government with two other parties.

The current heads of all the governing parties are women. Seven of the 11 cabinet ministers named on Saturday are also women.

Iceland has topped the World Economic Forum's global report on gender equality for the 15th consecutive year.

Frostadottir, a child-rearing mother, attended an assembly session with her baby in April. She told NHK at that time the assembly should be family-friendly.
