Taiwan to send survivors of capsized fishing boat to China NHK

Taiwanese authorities say they will send back to China two crew members who were aboard a Chinese fishing boat that capsized.

The boat overturned last Wednesday near Kinmen, a group of islands effectively controlled by Taiwan. The Kinmen islands are a short distance from China's coast. Two of the four crew members on the vessel died. The incident occurred as the boat was being pursued by a Taiwanese coast guard ship.

The Taiwanese authorities announced that they will send the two surviving crew members back to China on Tuesday.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council has called for better cross-strait relations between China and Taiwan.

China says it will send officials to accompany the crew members' families on a visit to the islands.

Officials in Taiwan said a tourist boat was inspected by Chinese authorities after it departed from Kinmen on Monday. This comes after China's coast guard said it would step up patrols in the waters around the islands.
