Temperatures across Japan rose to dangerously high levels on Wednesday. Some places had their hottest day this year. The intense heat is expected to continue through Thursday. The Japan Meteorological Agency said a high pressure system covered areas from western through northern Japan. The mercury soared to 39.7 degrees Celsius in Hatoyama Town, Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo. It tied for this year's highest temperature in Japan, observed in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture on July 16. Temperatures topped 35 degrees at more than 200 observation points. Central Tokyo experienced its hottest day this year, with a high of 37.7 degrees. The mercury has exceeded 35 degrees on eight days so far this month, a record for July, surpassing the seven days recorded in 2001. The number of people taken to hospitals with suspected heatstroke has been surging since early July. Some deaths have also been reported. Some people are becoming ill indoors. Officials are advising people to use air conditioning appropriately and to stay hydrated. They are also encouraging people to rest periodically when outdoors and take measures to prevent heat stroke.
