Angolan President Joao Lourenco has called for economic growth through mutual cooperation at a global conference on African development being held in Japan.
Lourenco spoke at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD, on Wednesday. He is the current chairperson of the African Union and is co-chairing TICAD with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru.
Lourenco noted that Africa faces various challenges that have been slowing down economic growth. He said health is a critical issue, along with education, food security, energy and infrastructure. He stressed that Africa needs to resume growth in order to meet the fundamental needs of its people.
Lourenco said, "We are living in interdependency." Noting the growing uncertainties in the international community, he said the probability of success in taking on humanity's challenges will improve under multilateralism that is based on the spirit of mutual assistance.
