Senior officials from Japan, the United States and South Korea will meet in the central Japanese prefecture of Nagano on Thursday, following last week's missile launch by North Korea.

The US State Department made the announcement on Monday.

The department said that the meeting will take place in the town of Karuizawa on Thursday.

It will be attended by the head of Japan's Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Funakoshi Takehiro, US special representative for North Korea Sung Kim and Seoul's special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs Kim Gunn.

The three are expected to exchange views on ways to closely cooperate in a response to North Korea, which test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile last Wednesday.
