A wave of drone attacks hit Ukraine's capital Kyiv overnight, killing one person and injuring three others when a drone hit a high-rise apartment building and exploded.

Ukrainian Air Force officials said on Tuesday that Russian forces launched airstrikes with 31 drones from around 11:30 p.m. Monday through 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, local time. They said 29 were shot down and that most of the airstrikes targeted Kyiv.

Ukraine had reportedly intercepted the drone that crashed into the uppermost part of the 20-story high-rise.

An NHK crew that went to the site after dawn found the walls of the apartment's top floor crumbled, and debris scattered over a wide area.

Residents had evacuated outside. Some were looking up at the building in disbelief, while others talked on the phone.

A 32-year-old man who lived on the fourth floor with his wife and 2-year-old son said the air raid siren sounded, and as they were evacuating they heard a loud explosion. He said it's terrible to attack people while they are sleeping.
