Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and US President Donald Trump are expected to hold their first summit on February 7 in Washington. Government officials have been working on a meeting in response to Ishiba's aim to talk to Trump as early as possible. At a Lower House panel session on Friday, Ishiba said he wants to raise the Japan-US alliance to a new level that will best serve the two countries' national interests. The prime minister apparently aims to build up mutual trust with Trump to strengthen ties. Ishiba will also stress the need to work for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific in the face of an increasingly assertive China.
