Ten dead after tourist boats capsize in China NHK

Four tourist boats have capsized in the inland Chinese province of Guizhou, leaving 10 people dead.

China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the boats capsized on Sunday in a river known to be a popular tourist destination, causing 84 passengers and crew to plunge into the water.

Local authorities launched a rescue operation. The report said 70 of the people rescued have undergone hospital treatment, and their conditions are not life-threatening.

Local media have quoted passengers as saying sudden downpours and strong winds weakened visibility at the time of the accident.

The accident occurred amid China's five-day May Day holiday, which ends on Monday. Crowds of people were seen flocking to tourist spots.

Following the incident, President Xi Jinping issued an instruction to strengthen safety measures in tourist attractions and on transportation systems serving people returning from holiday to prevent accidents.
