Indonesia's Prabowo declared winner of presidential election NHK

Indonesian authorities have declared Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto as the winner of last month's presidential election. But the losing candidates are crying foul.

Officials say Prabowo secured nearly 60 percent of the vote.

Speaking after the announcement, he said, "We will prove ourselves to be a president, vice president and government that will work as hard as possible for all the people of Indonesia."

Prabowo chose outgoing President Joko Widodo's son as his running mate. He was initially too young to register. But the Constitutional Court headed by Joko's brother-in-law made an exception.

Election candidate Anies Baswedan believes that shouldn't have been allowed. The former Jakarta governor's camp filed a case with the court on Thursday. He reportedly wants the election held again, without Joko's son.

Anies said: "I emphasize once again that the process and the results are equally important. Because the right process gives the right result. And if there is a problem, then the outcome is problematic too."

The court will likely decide whether to dismiss or proceed with the claim by April 16.

The other candidate in the election was former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo. His camp also plans to challenge the result.
